England’s Historic Pie House

The humble pie? Not so! Here it's the Champion of all British cooking!

The Pies of Old England

The Old Exeter Inn is renowned for its hand-made shortcrust pies and suet puddings with our rich Port gravy (5 days in the making). And noted too for fine faggots and proper Brixham fish and chips. This is the food of Old England – simple cooking, honest ingredients, and hearty portions. Scroll down for our menus – you can download or print them too.

Our specials and puddings change daily and are chalked on the blackboards. We also offer a fabulous artisan cheese board of fine British cheeses. New for 2026, our superb conservas — premium tinned sardines, mussels, mackerel, scallops and herring, served from the tin with toasted bread and pickles, and perfectly paired with a glass of Fino sherry.

Proper Pies. Made Properly

With fresh meat and vegetables from the South West of England, wrapped in golden shortcrust pastry and baked to hand-made perfection, the pies of the Old Exeter Inn are everything a proper pie should be. With crispy chips or our fresh buttered mashed potatoes!

Traditional Beef Dripping

For goodness and flavour, we cook only in beef dripping – and for good reason. Food cooked in dripping tastes proper. It supports our British farmers, it’s better for you than many modern alternatives, and it carries with it the honest taste of yesteryear. For those who prefer a vegetable-based oil, this is also available.

Souvenir Scroll!

Do ask for your complimentary souvenir scroll when you visit. It paints a picture of where our ancient inn sits within the long history of this island – including the tale of that famous Devonian explorer and spy, Sir Walter Raleigh, who was arrested here for treason against the King. Whatever did he say to his executioner?
