Our Special Summer Ale – inspired by a truly unforgettable encounter in 2025. Let’s just say we met someone who had a rather creative relationship with truth and reality. Gifted in unpleasantness. Part Fatal Attraction, part Misery. You couldn’t make it up. So we made a beer instead. The Fantasist.
All proceeds to MIND Devon to help people with serious mental health problems.
Here’s the story: Gather ’round, brave souls, and hark the tale of this summer’s most extraordinary brew: The Fantasist. We at the Old Exeter, fueled by moonlit whispers and the mischief of mischievous sprites, poured not just malt and hops into our cauldron, but a potent blend of the most fantastical ingredients.
As the fires crackled and the brew bubbled, we stirred in generous measures of tall tales and lies galore, each one adding a layer of perplexing delight. We infused it with the raw, untamed essence of hatred and the fiery depths of fake passion, creating a complexity that defies simple understanding. But fear not, for into that same bubbling concoction, we added an outpouring of love and empathy, a golden counterpoint to the darker notes, all viewed through a beautifully twisted lens of life. We stirred and stirred and stirred, until every contradictory element was perfectly melded.
Then, drawn by the potent aroma, the great Trolls emerged from their earthy lairs, their eyes wide with anticipation. They gathered around, each one eager to taste the strange and wondrous brew. Above them, the magnificent Dragon circled, its scales shimmering in the twilight and ancient eyes fixed on the steaming cauldron.
But as the first drops touched the Trolls’ lips, and just as the Dragon began to descend, there was a sudden, inexplicable puff! Like a wisp of smoke, the grand old Dragon vanished into the ether. Over the jagged peaks of the mountains, it soared, a fleeting shadow against the setting sun, off to find new Trolls to bewilder and new adventures to claim. Poor, poor Dragon, forever chasing the next tall tale.
And that, my friends, is the spirit of The Fantasist – a brew as unpredictable and captivating as the very world of hospitality itself. Enjoy!
The Fantasist is pouring soon at the Old Exeter Inn, and our chosen Charity this Summer is MIND Devon. Every Pint of The Fantasist you buy at the Old Exeter Inn, we will donate all the proceeds to help people with serious mental health problems in Devon.
The Fantasist Tasting Notes
This exquisite brew, touched by the golden rays of the Sunstone Orb, is crafted with the rare and shimmering Calypso hops, whispered to have bloomed under the watchful eyes of mischievous dryads. Behold its hue: a luminous, honeyed gold, reminiscent of liquid sunshine poured into your tankard. Raise your chalice, and let the aromatic breath of the ancient woods fill your senses, a promise of the delights within. Taste the magic that dances upon your tongue: a light and sprightly beginning, swiftly followed by a noble bitterness that speaks of forgotten quests, before giving way to a cascade of fruity enchantment. This is a brew of surprising yet subtle strength, clocking in at a respectable 3.4% abv, perfectly balanced for a summer’s eve or a moment of quiet contemplation in the forest.
