England has a big heart and a big soul – and both of them live somewhere between a pie and a roast. The crust and the carving. The two dinners that built this country – and for nine hundred years they never shared a plate. The Old Exeter Inn brings them together!
A handmade pie at the heart of a proper roast — a good slice of topside beef, roast potatoes, buttered mash, crackling, a Yorkshire pudding filled with fresh vegetables and our five-day Port gravy. Choose your pie: Steak & Ale, Cheese, Potato & Leek, or Chicken, Ham & White Wine. (For those who don’t want the beef, we have our own nut roast). Cauliflower cheese on the side, because it’s Sunday (and extra beef portions available too).
Not in a pie mood? There’s fresh fish of the day, chef’s specials and the house favourites – and always a bowl of today’s freshly made soup with bread to start. Puddings and ice creams are chalked up on the boards, with an artisan cheese board if you’d sooner finish savoury.
All of it served in the small candlelit rooms of the world’s oldest freehouse, with real ale from the barrel, Devon scrumpy, and our house wines by the glass or carafe.
