We named our own brand Pilsner after the year Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested at the Old Exeter Inn. Brewed for the Exeter in Belgium where we sourced it in 2021 (and got horribly drunk in the process). Again, this is a Belgian Export beer. Not gnats made in Luton. It’s refreshing. Continental. It will bring you close to the EU. If you can’t swallow that then try Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone Premium Lager. Brewed in the Cotswolds.
Lamb & Serpent is our own Scrumpy. So called because it’s a gentle cider with a bite! Nothing short of excellent. Made a mile or two from the inn from apples from old and new orchards, this organic cider is spectacular. Served straight from the cellar. This is David’s favourite, although Reddaways is a strong contender for second place. Too close to call. Who cares? It’s all excellent. It’s Devon! It’s Cider country.
I couldn’t remember some of the customers’ names when I first came here so I cheerfully addressed them as ‘Dear Boy’, or simply ‘Madam’ for the ladies. An hilarious chap who appears to live in the sewers of Troll Land (you know the kind, they’re everywhere – keyboard warrior, no brain, no experience, opinionated big mouth with no real mates) spewed that the Old Exeter Inn had been ruined by me – “DEAR BOY” (I’d never even met the bloke and he certainly wasn’t a customer). Where do these clowns come from? He’s worth his weight in gold. Troll Land is funny. It’s ‘Dim Land’ really, but don’t tell them.
So, I named a beer in his honour. And unlike him, it’s got great taste. Cheers, DEAR BOY!
Tudor Gold is our regular House Real Ale. Brewed for us by our friends at Otter Brewery in Honiton, the beer is a delightful session brew India Pale Ale. It’s on the bar most of the time and is sold at a remarkably good price. The name comes from the golden colour of the ale. How perfect is that for the Old Exeter Inn and Sir Walter Raleigh’s exploits in Tudor times looking for the Lost City of Gold ‘El Dorado’.
Based on Summerisle, the fictional village in the brilliant and terrifying 1975 film The Wicker Man, our Summer Beer of the same name is a stunning brew crafted on Dartmoor just for the Old Exeter Inn. Summerisle and Ashburton have similarities (I’m talking about the natural beauty), so the name just came naturally to us. We love this label. We love the beer more. We’re two years into it, and most importantly, our customers are loving it more every year. See you in 2026 or the new batch!
Golden Mane, our 4.3% ale brewed locally for us on Dartmoor, is on the bar a fair bit. Golden Mane is a light and easy-drinking real ale poured straight from the barrel off the granite stillage. Featuring Aslan in the design, our favourite Big Boy Cat! You will also see Aslan on our menus. He’s there as our proud mascot because the Lion is the animal that best personifies Britishness. Courage. Dignity. Strength and, of course, Pride.
